PEOPLE from across the Forest brightened up Lydney at the weekend as they took part in the annual Cancer Research UK Relay For Life.

For the 9th year running, hundreds camped out at Forest Leisure as they joined together to celebrate raising money to fight cancer.

Lynne Garner, senior relay development executive at Cancer Research UK opened the event on Saturday at midday and was greeted with “a riot of fancy dress.”

She said: “The weekend was just incredible, a lot of people who hadn’t been to the event before were blown away.

“There were 350 participants which varied in age from three-week-old babies in prams to pensioners. It started with an inspirational survivors opening lap, which is a celebration of Life and involves teams of people walking around the track for 24 hours whilst a carnival atmosphere and party is in full swing.

“Lots of people turned up in vibrant fancy dress and have spent the last few months raising money in many different and creative ways to fund research into more than 200 cancers. It’s hard not to be inspired by people’s creativity and, in these tough times, we are still finding people donate willingly.

“I am so proud to have witnessed the events at the weekend, so many people have different stories to tell and no matter what we always have fun – we are one big happy family. I am already getting people looking forward to next year’s event.”
